Sochi is located on the southern borders of the Russian Federation, on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus in Krasnodar region. The distance to Moscow is 1,700 km. Sochi is considered the second longest city in the world. It stretches for 146 km along the Black Sea.


Sochi was founded in 1838 as the defensive fort Alexandria. Its modern name was given in 1890, and the official status of the city in 1917.

  • Sochi is the most northern subtropics in the world. The city is located at 43 degrees north latitude, almost at the same latitude as Nice. Sunny weather on the coast is preserved 300 days a year. The temperature of sea water from May to October is not below +22 degrees, and in winter does not fall below +8.

    Sochi is one of the few places on Earth where a wide variety of climatic zones is represented in a relatively small area: from snow peaks and cool Alpine meadows, to humid subtropics and warm sea.

In Sochi there are representatives of more than 120 nationalities, united in the diasporas and the city Council of national communities. The resort has many monuments and institutions that testify to the centuries-old friendship of the Caucasus peoples, such as the garden-museum "Tree of Friendship", the Center for National Cultures in Lazarevsky, the ethnographic complex "Amshensky Dvor", a lot of local history expositions telling about the history of the Black Sea coast and peoples inhabiting it.


More than 80% of the resort territory is a state protected nature reserve. Sochi is undoubtedly a city park. Due to the fact that the mountains "do not admit" cold winds to the resort, thousands of trees, flowers and shrubs feel perfect here: palms, cypresses, oleanders, sequo, bamboo, yucca and other representatives of the subtropical flora. There are also parts of the relic forest with centuries-old yew and prehistoric fern and moss.
Sochi is considered one of the most environmentally friendly places on the planet. And the reason is not only in the abundance of vegetation. In the city, for example, there are no large industrial enterprises. A modern transport logistics has been developed, which minimizes the impact of automobile emissions on the environment.
The resort has no landfills, all garbage is exported outside the city. In 2016 experts recognized sea water in the Sochi water area as the cleanest for all time and absolutely safe for those who bathe. This happened due to the construction of new treatment facilities and drainage and sewage networks. The city is provided with clean drinking water from artesian sources.


The basis of the Sochi economy is the sanatorium and resort industry. Its turnover amounted to 23 billion rubles last year.


Dozens of architectural monuments of federal and regional significance are in Sochi. The most famous of them are the Church of the Archangel Michael, the Winter Theater, the building of the Railway Station and the Marine Station, the Summer Theater in Frunze Park, the tower on Mount Akhun. Its external architectural appearance in the style of the Stalin Empire was preserved by many sanatoriums and cultural institutions and now, after the restoration, they are an ornament of modern Sochi.

Within the concept of a unified architectural appearance, 12,000 private residential and commercial buildings were reconstructed and repaired in the resort, which are in a single color style.


Sochi beat its own "Soviet" record for the number of vacationers. In 2016, more than 6 million 100 thousand tourists have already visited here and all of them have arrived by sea, air, rail or road.

As a result of the modernization of the International Air and Sea Ports, conditions have been created for turning Sochi into a major international center for sea and air passenger transportation.

As for moving inside the city, there are two alternatives. It is possible to overcome all 146 kilometers of the Sochi coast, to get to Olympic Park or to the mountains on Krasnaya Polyana by the train “Lastochka”. For this purpose, 200 kilometers of railroad tracks and 54 bridge railway structures were additionally built. You can also explore the area, traveling on the roads on public comfortable air-conditioned buses. By this time, Sochi has 365 kilometers of new modern highways and 22 tunnels.


Sochi is one of the safest places in Russia. The city infrastructure is fully prepared for mass events taking into account the highest security standards. The system "Safe City" was created, within which key public areas of the resort are provided with video surveillance, as well as large residential neighborhoods.
