Sochi is located on the southern borders of the Russian Federation, on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus in Krasnodar region. The distance to Moscow is 1,700 km. Sochi is considered the second longest city in the world. It stretches for 146 km along the Black Sea.
Sochi was founded in 1838 as the defensive fort Alexandria. Its modern name was given in 1890, and the official status of the city in 1917.
Sochi is the most northern subtropics in the world. The city is located at 43 degrees north latitude, almost at the same latitude as Nice. Sunny weather on the coast is preserved 300 days a year. The temperature of sea water from May to October is not below +22 degrees, and in winter does not fall below +8.
Sochi is one of the few places on Earth where a wide variety of climatic zones is represented in a relatively small area: from snow peaks and cool Alpine meadows, to humid subtropics and warm sea.
The permanent population of Sochi has exceeded 500 thousand people. This city is recognized as the most comfortable for living in Russia and steadily increasing population speaks for it. It is warm and green almost all year round. There is no shortage of housing and jobs. Sports and infrastructure facilities built for the Olympics, as well as hotels and inns constantly require competent staff and managers.
More than 60 large social facilities, including schools, kindergartens, cultural institutions, hospitals and polyclinics, have either recently been renovated or built from scratch.
Healthcare in Sochi has long since reached a new level. The equipment of hospitals and doctors’ professionalism can compete with the leading clinics of the capitals of Russian regions. For example, in the Sochi Perinatal Center there is a unique equipment that can take care of deeply premature infants. This was a factor in increasing the birth rate at the resort too.
More than 41% of Sochi residents regularly go in for sports and lead a healthy lifestyle. This was helped by the presence in the city of almost 800 sports facilities - from street simulators and grounds for parkour to the fundamental stadiums and sports centers.
In Sochi there are representatives of more than 120 nationalities, united in the diasporas and the city Council of national communities. The resort has many monuments and institutions that testify to the centuries-old friendship of the Caucasus peoples, such as the garden-museum "Tree of Friendship", the Center for National Cultures in Lazarevsky, the ethnographic complex "Amshensky Dvor", a lot of local history expositions telling about the history of the Black Sea coast and peoples inhabiting it.
